President Akufo-Addo has charged managers of Private Tertiary Institutions to prepare themselves to absorb free Senior High School graduates in 2020.
According to the President, Public Tertiary Institutions will not able to admit all the Free SHS graduates given the 17% to 20% increase in enrolment as a result of the policy.
In a speech read on his behalf by the Minister of State In charge of Planning, Prof. George Yaw Gyan-Baffour at the 9th Congregation of the Pentecost University College (PUC), President Akufo-Addo reiterated his commitment to making education affordable and accessible to the poor.
“The Increasing enrolment numbers in our secondary, technical and Vocational schools equally present opportunities in the future for our tertiary institutions come 2020. By improving the quality of our secondary education, we expect the pass rate to also increase from the current 30 percent to 50 percent and beyond,” he stated.
He continued: “I’m therefore appealing to our tertiary institutions and more especially the private one to equip themselves and be ready to take advantage of the increasing number of students that will pass out of our secondary, technical and vocational education. This is because even though increasingly government continues to invest in our public tertiary institutions, it is obvious they will not be able to absorb every student that passes out in 2020.”
