Prez. never Approached Prof. Mensah Bonsu to be EC Chair – Jinapor
Deputy Chief of Staff, Samuel Abu Jinapor has dismissed claims that President Nana Akufo Addo approached Senior Law Lecturer at the University of Ghana school of law, Prof. Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu to serve as the next Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
There have been reports that President Akufo Addo consulted Prof. Henrietta Mensah Bonsu to serve as the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) after the impeachment of Mrs Charlotte Osei, but she rejected the offer on the grounds that the processes leading to the impeachment of Charlotte Osei was tainted with fraud, the reason why the President settled settled on Jean Mensah as a second choice.
But speaking on News File on Joy FM Saturday, Samuel Abu Jinapor stated that at no point in time did the name of Prof. Henrietta Mensah Bonsu who’s a member of the United Nations Independent Panel On Peace Operations come up for consideration as the Boss of the election management body.
“I’ve been very much involved in processes, deliberations and consultations and all that it took to get us to this point of the nomination of Mrs Jean Mensah. Prof. Mensah Bonsu I can state on authority has never been approached by the President or any member of government as regards her possible nomination as Chairperson of the EC. Her name never came up, the President from the very get go had been very settled on Mrs Jean Mensah, she’s been his first choice, second choice and third choice. There’s never been any instance where Prof. Henrietta Mensah Bonsu’s name ever came up.”
Samuel Abu Jinapor, added that President Akufo Addo engaged in broad quiet consultation with persons like former EC Chairperson Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan in respect of what his (Akufo Addo) thinking was and the views that others will have about the direction that he intended to go.
