The Conference of Heads of Private Second Cycle Schools (CHOPPS) has called for the government to absorb more private second cycle schools into the free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
CHOPPS has since the inception of the free SHS policy expressed concerns over threat to collapse private SHSs.
Though the government subsequently absorbed 15 private secondary schools to help meet the growing intake of students, CHOPPS has consistently called for more private schools to be absorbed into the programme.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem yesterday, spokesperson for CHOPPS, Mr Kyei Baffour, expressed disappointment in government’s resistance in absorbing more private second cycle schools into the free SHS programme, despite its challenges in dealing with increasing numbers of students.
He described government’s introduction of the double-track system as wrong and not necessary, as the private schools have the requisite facilities to absorb the growing numbers of students entering second cycle schools.
He added that the government could take advantage of the facilities the private schools have and use them to support the free SHS policy.
According to him, there are a lot of private schools currently on life support, barely surviving and urged the government to absorb more of the private schools into the free SHS policy.
