Protesters remanded for 14 days

The Accra Circuit Court 6 has remanded a number of Democracy Hub demonstrators in custody for two weeks.

The accused were arrested by the police during a 21-23 September protest at the road intersection adjoining the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

They pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful assembly, unlawful damage, assault of a police officer and conspiracy to commit a crime.

They are expected back in court on 8 October 2024.

The Ghana Police Service had previously cautioned the leaders of Democracy Hub that lawful measures would be taken to maintain order, following disruptive protests on the first day of their demonstration which blocked roads and inconvenienced commuters.

The protesters attempted to block sections of the road with a vehicle, dismantle police crash barriers and attack police officers on duty.

In response to the disruptive actions, the police were compelled to use lawful means to restrain the demonstrators and restore order. The vehicle causing the blockade was towed from the scene, and some protesters fled.

Democracy Hub had announced its intention to hold a three-day protest from 21-23 September 2024 at Revolutionary Square, on the opposite side of the Liberation Road from Jubilee House, a short walk from the 37 Military Hospital.

The protest, organised under the theme “A New Constitution for a New Generation”, was to highlight pressing national issues.

In a formal statement, Democracy Hub confirmed that it had notified the Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare, of its intention to hold the protest, in compliance with the Public Order Act. – AsaaseNews
