‘Public Facilities in Dormaa Central Are Disability Unfriendly’

Mr John Yeboah Asuamah, the Secretary to the Federation of Disabled in the Dormaa Central Municipality, has said 90 per cent of public facilities in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Brong Ahafo Region are disability unfriendly.

He said many public facilities, notably senior high schools and the Municipal Assembly Office Building, were completely inaccessible by persons with disability in the area.

Mr Asuamah said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Dormaa-Ahenkro.

He said the Disability Law 2006, Act 715, must be amended to grant autonomy to the disabled to institute legal action against public facilities, which made their establishments inaccessible to persons with disability.

“This is based on the UN Convention on Disability,” he added.

He expressed worry that the Municipal Assembly failed to include them in development planning, which did not augur very well for the development and welfare of persons with disability in the area.

Mr Asuamah said the Federation had been in the area to observe and assess the conditions of people with disability and their accessibility to such public institutions.

He said they were not under obligation to compel such institutions to provide accessibility because there was no law backing such a move.
