Quality Education In A Useful Context

In the month of March 2019, Ghana’s Minister for Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, sat in as a panel member during the Global Education and skills Forum in Dubai.

What do young people call Quality Education? Is it an education delivered to match that of successful nations or one where those educated are equipped with the right skills and knowledge set useful for either creating or gaining employment?

This was the point of discussion for a panel I sat in at the Global Education and skills Forum in Dubai.
Master Card Foundation has done a study on the quality of education expected by the 21st century youth of Africa and it implies that many young people want skills relevant to the needs of this era, ones that will make them more entrepreneurial than job seekers.

I explained that the Ministry of Education in Ghana is assiduously reforming our education sector, with particular focus on the teacher. When we get teacher training right, our curriculum and Technical and Vocational Training And Education (TVET) reforms run smoothly.

The youth are impatient for radical change in education and Ms Odibeli from Nigeria, who represented the youth on the panel orated her frustrations fluently.

However, us as Minister of Education cannot pick and choose when it comes to delivery of quality education. We are tasked with the provision of affordable but quality wholistic solutions that aim to serve the needs of the country.

His Excellency Presient Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has a vision to industrialize Ghana and therefore our special focus to revamp Technical and Vocational Training And Education (TVET).

With the successful rollout of our reforms in education, it is our hope that the youth who receive an education in Ghana will be well equipped to become independent problem solvers geared for national development.
