Monarchs, political and religious leaders past and present from across the world would this morning join members of Britain’s royal family in London for the State funeral service of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The service would be held at the Westminster Abbey, the historic church where Britain’s kings and queens are crowned.
The late Queen was herself crowned at the same venue as monarch on February 6, 1952 some 70 years ago, and she remained Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth until her death on Thursday September 8, 2022 at the age of 96.
Today’s funeral is expected to be attended by some 2,000 guests including several hundred presidents, heads of state and monarchs, who would all will file into the Abbey to pay their last respect to the departed Queen.
The funeral service would be officiated by a tall list of clergy led by the Dean of Westminster David Hoyle, with readings from Britain’s new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, and a sermon preached by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.
The funeral will be screened across several locations including London’s Hyde Park, as well as in locations in Sheffield, Birmingham, Carlisle, Edinburgh, Coleraine, Bedford, Bradford, Coventry, Exeter, Leeds, Manchester, and Newcastle.
American President Joe Biden, the Emperor of Japan Naruhito and French President Emmanuel Macron are among the guests attending today’s historic event.
More than 10,000 police officers from all over the country will be stationed in the capital as the authorities expect record crowds along the funeral route.
In the afternoon, Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin will travel to Windsor Castle for a church service. She will then be buried in a private ceremony in the evening.
After her death on September 8, her son, Prince Charles became King Charles III at age 73 and is the longest serving heir apparent in British history as well as the oldest person to be crowned King.
