A/R: Police, Robbers In Gun Battle

A fierce gun battle between the police and a group of armed civilians suspected to be robbers has left on of the suspects dead and a policeman hospitalized with severe injuries.

The shooting incident, according to a police report that thepublisheronline.com has sighted, happened around 9pm at the outskirts of Asuofia Township in the Ashanti Region on Friday June 19, 2020.

The police, acting upon intelligence, had mounted a road block to search oncoming vehicles to help prevent some suspected hoodlums from carrying out a robbery expedition at Asuofia.

Eventually, a Kia Rio vehicle, with registration number AS 7849-19 appeared at the scene, loaded with some male passengers with heavily built muscles, but the driver refused to stop after police had ordered them to stop for routine checks.

A police report further stated that to the horror of the policemen, the driver sped through the blockade and hit one policeman with his vehicle in the process in a gory manner.

The robbers then opened rapid fire in all directions.
The police team from the Ashanti Regional Command and Asuofia also returned fire, which led to one robber being hit from the rear.

Sensing danger, the occupants of the car alighted and fled on foot through the bush, leaving behind their injured accomplice, identified as Kofi Ziaba aka ‘Wizzy’ to his fate.

The police rushed Wizzy to the hospital for medical care but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The injured policeman is also receiving treatment at the Asuofia Health Center.
