Race For NPP Chair: Wontumi Picks Sir John Over Blay
The hopes of Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie aka ‘Sir John’, to become the next National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has earned the support of the Ashanti Regional chair of the party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, nicknamed as ‘Wontumi’.
Wontomi has made it public that he would work to make sure that Sir John succeeds current NPP Chairman Freddie Blay.
According to him, the entire NPP fraternity in the Ashanti Region are in support for Sir John, who hails from the region, regarded as the NPPs stronghold, to lead the NPP in 2022.
He said in the history of the NPP, since the inception of the 1992 constitution, a son/daughter of the Ashanti Region had never occupied the NPP National chairman seat before.
Wontumi recounted the extraordinary benefits that the NPP had derived from the NPP all these years and insisted that it was high time a son of the region led the party as chairman.
“It is my personal ambition to lead a crusade for Sir John, a son of the Ashanti region, to become the NPP national chairman, and the entire party members in the region support it.
“Mac Manu, an Ashanti man, had occupied the seat before but he was then the Western regional NPP chairman. This time around we are presenting an Ashanti man on Ashanti ticket”.
Wontumi recounted how Sir John had contributed to his (Wontumi’s) victory as Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, saying that Sir John has admired him for so many years even till now.
“Back in the days, I was in the camp of Alan Kyeremanteng, where I was the bankroller, and Sir John was for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“Sir John used to tell me then that he would snatch me to President Nana Akufo-Addo’s camp because I was posing problems for them”, he recounted on Wontumi Radio in Kumasi.
Wontumi also said he (Wontumi) would one day become the NPP national chairman, saying “current NPP chairman, Freddie Blay has given me his blessings to lead the party one day”.
According to him, he is young therefore he would wait patiently for Sir John to occupy the NPP national chairman position before he would contemplate of occupying the key position.
He said the entire NPP constituency chairman in the Ashanti Region have asked him to lead the party as chairman once again before thinking about the national chairman position.
“During a Regional Council Meeting, the constituency chairmen, unanimously, said they are expecting me to lead the NPP Ashanti region once again so I am not going now”, he noted.
