Rainstorm Destroys 120 Buildings, Renders 300 Homeless in Assin North

A heavy downpour accompanied by rainstorm on has caused extensive damage to property running into several thousands of Ghana cedis to residents in the Assin North Municipality in the Central Region.

The storm, which lasted for about an hour, affected about 120 buildings and displaced more than 300 residents, according to Mr Moses Afedzi, the Municipal Coordinator for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

There was no recorded death, however, many people sustained various degrees of injuries as they ran helter skelter in the ravaging thunder and lightning rainstorm.

The affected structures included; Municipal Schools such as D.C.B Junior High School (JHS) “A”, 31st December Women’s Movement JHS, Anglican JHS, Seventh Day Adventists JHS among others were badly affected.

The worse affected communities were; Pantoase, Butuase, Abesoa, Mempasem, Nsuakyi, pomping-side, station, Paraamu, Juaso, Nyankomasi, Brofoyedru among others.

In most of the aforementioned communities, GNA observed that the roofing sheets were either totally or partially ripped up.

Power supply to the community was also disrupted following destruction of electric poles with some of it slanting down.

The GNA spotted most of the affected victims wailing while others counted their losses shortly after the rainstorm, however, officials of NADMO had since visited the scenes, inspected the extent of damage and assured to support them to ameliorate their plights.

Mr Afedzi empathised with the displaced persons asked them to take steps to rehabilitate themselves pending support from NADMO and the municipal Assembly.

He appealed to individuals and faith-based organisations to assist the victims.

Madam Ernestina Adobea, an affected person whose house was grounded said she has lost all her important documents and money and had no place to sleep.

In that respect, she passionately appealed to the government to immediately come to their aid with relief items such as mattresses, roofing sheets, clothes and money.
