Regulate drinking spots near stadiums – Kofi Adams told

Akuapem North Member of Parliament, Samuel Awuku, has called on the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, to regulate drinking spots near stadiums to reduce hooliganism.

Addressing Parliament on fan violence, Awuku highlighted how alcohol consumption before matches fuels unruly behavior.

“One major concern is the proximity of drinking spots to stadiums. Fans can’t bring alcohol inside, but many drink excessively before entry. When tensions flare during a game, impaired judgment often leads to misconduct,” he noted.

Awuku stressed the need for stricter regulations on commercial activities around stadiums.

“We must carefully consider the types of businesses allowed near our venues. Food vendors are fine, but bars and drinking spots pose risks. I urge the Sports Minister to prioritize security, officiating, and regulating drinking spots near stadiums,” he added.

The MP also emphasized that poor officiating significantly contributes to football-related violence and must be addressed alongside security measures.

His comments come in the wake of the Ghana Premier League’s suspension, following violent clashes during the Nsoatreman FC vs. Asante Kotoko match on February 2, 2025, at Nana Konamansah Park. The incident tragically resulted in the death of Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, known as Nana Pooley.

As discussions unfold, stakeholders are urged to collaborate on enhancing safety at stadiums and fostering a more disciplined football culture.
