The Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin should be allowed to serve as the Minority Leader in the 9th parliament when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) forms the Minority Caucus, Joseph Osei-Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament has said.
“I would not support any request for a new person to be brought into the picture. If you ask me, let Afenyo-Markin continue. He started and there is nobody currently who has had that experience before him”, Mr. Osei-Owusu alias Joe Wise told a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday.
He continued: “The only person who has had that experience before him was Honourable Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and he is leaving Parliament. He (Afenyo-Markin) is now the only person who has the sufficient, not only sufficient, but some experience to lead going forward so I will not recommend any other person. So in my view, let Afenyo-Markin continue”, Joseph Osei-Owusu noted.
The First Deputy Speaker gave further reasons Afenyo-Markin would be the NPP’s best choice for Minority Leader for the 9th Parliament:
“I strongly believe in longevity and experience. For our own actions and inactions, you can tell that when Kyei was Minority Leader and Majority leader, he stood out very clear. It did not happen by accident. He started as a Chief Whip and grew up to become a leader and longevity brings experience and clarity….
“Again, where we are now, we need to be combative. We can never influence decisions at best we would get 91 and we cannot change any decision but our voices must be very loudly heard in and out of the chamber. What is requires is somebody who is strong and willing to stand the heat”, Joe Wise added.
