A team of gun wielding men suspected to be robbers on Saturday evening caused a stare at Asante Mampong as they boldly engaged the police there in a free for all gun battle as though it was a scene from a war film.
The suspected highway robbers, said to be six in number were in possession of pump action guns and sharp-looking machetes as they robbed some passengers on the road.
The police in Asante Mampong were called to save the situation and prevent more people from falling prey to the hardened robbers, but they were met with a gun battle.
The trigger-happy robbers, who were ready to spill human blood, quickly opened fire at the sight of a police vehicle, turning the place into an action scene in a Hollywood movie.
A police report said the security agents, in a way of self defence, also fired back and in the course of the fierce gun battle, one of the six robbers, was shot dead instantly.
It said before the police arrived at Woraso to Sataso on the Asante Mampong to Ejura Highway, where the robbery was taking place, the robbers had managed to rob some people already.
Passengers onboard a Kia truck with registration number AS 9042-09, driven by one Issifu Haruna, were robbed a cash amount of GHC 2,500 by the robbers at gun-point.
The armed men, who were having a field’s day, also robbed occupants of a Xayong mini bus with, registration number AS 9181-13, driven by Solomon Acheampon, an amount of GHC 1,600.
But for the arrival of the police at the scene, the robbers would have freely robbed other people that would have plied the busy road on that fateful Saturday evening.
The police report said five of the robbers managed to flee through a thick bush, leaving behind their colleague, who was shot and killed by the police during the gun battle.
Five empty cartridges were found at the crime scene, the police report indicated, adding that the body of the deceased robber was at the Asante Mampong Government Hospital morgue for autopsy.
