A FIERCE gun battle between armed policemen and four heavily-armed highway robbers on the Obuasi-Kumasi highway around 2am on Tuesday, has resulted in the demise of one of the suspects
The bandits, who were in the middle of a robbery operation, mistakenly flashed their torch light to signal an oncoming Jacobu Police patrol vehicle to stop in between Heman and Akokoaso on the main Anwiankwanta to Obuasi road.
Upon realising that they had signaled a wrong vehicle to stop, the robbers quickly opened fire on the security agents, who were compelled to return fire, leading to a fierce gun battle on the highway, which was dark then.
In the course of the exchange of fire, the policemen managed to shoot and killed one of the bandits. The three remaining robbers then fled through a nearby bush, ostensibly to prevent being apprehended to face the law.
A police report sighted by the paper indicated that the deceased was sent to the morgue for preservation and autopsy. The security agents therefore commenced investigations to help apprehend the three escapees.
Some few hours later, the police managed to arrest the three other suspects, who had then changed their outfit and were in the process of escaping to an unknown destination to make the police work difficult.
“The Patrol team returned to their normal patrols on the road in search of the escapees and at about 5.00am, they spotted three men walking along the roadside. They were accosted, arrested and detained for investigations.
“These suspects gave their names to police as Umar Boobey 59yrs, Jibor Karim 28yrs and Saadoh Ali 23yrs. One short locally manufactured gun, two(2) live & two(2) empty AAA cartridges, one short machete, two(2) torch lights, four mobile phones and assorted dresses retained”.
