THE ASHANTI Regional Police are on the heels of seven suspected robbers, following the gruesome killing of a bank cashier, identified only as Atakorah.
The deceased was in a bullion van with a driver and two armed policemen from Manso Offinho Asamang to Kumasi on Friday afternoon, when the robbers shot him dead.
The unpleasant incident, which happened on the outskirts of Manso Mem on Friday around 2pm, saw the robbers taking away two big metal boxes, loaded with money.
Surprisingly, the hardened robbers, who are still on the run, also took away two AK47 assault rifles from the two policemen, who were supposed to guard the bullion van.
Serious Injuries
One of the policemen, identified as Corporal Felix Agyei Agyeman and the driver, Antwi Boasiako, were also hit by bullets and they are battling for their lives in hospital now.
Some Good Samaritans rushed them to the St Martins Catholic Hospital for treatment but they were referred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital because their injuries were severe.
The other policeman, whose name was given as Sergeant Enock Kwame Teye, was said to have suffered minor injuries so he was treated and discharged the same day.
The lifeless body of Atakorah, who was hit by series of gunshots, is currently at the St Martins Catholic Hospital at Agroyesum, awaiting autopsy from pathologists.
Police Report
A police report sighted by the paper noted that the police hierarchy in the Ashanti Region are incensed about the daylight robbery and so they are hunting for the robbers.
It said the police are leaving no stone unturned in their bid to chase and apprehend the suspected robbers, who are seven in number, to be dealt with accordingly by the law.
According to the report, a group of experienced crime scene investigators from Kumasi, have been sent to Manso Mem to help arrest the perpetrators to face the law.
How It Happened
The police report said the bullion van was heading to Kumasi from Manso Offinho Asamang that fateful Friday afternoon.
When the Toyota Hilux car reached the mid-section of the road at Manso Mem Junction, from nowhere, the hoodlums started to fire gunshots from all directions into the car.
The robbers, who were seven in number, were wearing face masks to conceal their face, as they used AK47 assault rifles and pump action guns, to shoot their hapless victims.
The vehicle then stopped in the middle of the road and the robbers snatched two AK47 rifles from the two policemen, before taking away two boxes, containing bundles of cash.
