Members of the Public Utility Workers Union (PURC) of the Ghana Water Company Limited in the Ashanti Region, are calling for the immediate dismissal of their Board Chairman, Afenyo Markin.
The members are also demanding the removal of the 3rd Deputy Managing Director of the Company.
They have tied banners at entrances of the company in Kumasi, calling for the dismissal of the two officers.
It is unclear why the members are embarking on such a protest. They have declined comment on the matter saying their national executives are mandated to speak on it.
Citi News’ Ashanti Regional correspondent, Hafiz Tijani, who visited some GWCL offices in the region observed that “red bands are tied at the main entrance of the Ashanti Regional North office of the Ghana Water Company at Suame here in Kumasi.”
He said there were banners with inscriptions such as ‘Save Ghana Water Company Limited operations’ ‘Ghana Water Company Limited workers say Board Chairman must go’. ‘ No to third deputy MD operations’ ‘Chop chop must stop now’ at the entrance of the company.
“This banner is replicated in most of the offices of the company like the Kumasi East and the regional office of the company visited. Sources say it is a nationwide protest against the third Deputy MD of the company and the Board Chairman of the Ghana Water Company Limited,” Hafiz added.
A few weeks ago, some workers of the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GPHA) and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) similarly called for the dismissal of their Board Chairman.
While the GPHA called for the dismissal of their Board Chair, Peter Mac Manu over allegations of corruption, workers of COCOBOD said theirs, Hackman Owusu Agyemang, was usurping the authority of the Chief Executive.
Mr. Hackman Owusu Agyemang however dismissed these allegations, saying workers were only fighting against his transformational agenda.
