Ghanaian reggae and dancehall artiste, Samini, one of the bigwigs from the creative arts fraternity who openly endorsed and campaigned for President Nana Akufo-Addo’s 2020 presidential bid on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has publicly told the President that all is not well in the country and Ghanaians cannot continue to pretend about it.
“Dear @NAkufoAddo. I supported you to bring change and stability.
“I believed in the vision and your concept of change! But with 2 years to go, my soul bleeds. Our investments wash away daily as the dollar openly whips our Cedi. Your people are crying. We cannot pretend all is well. But if God has blessed Ghana with anything, it is our ability to stare difficulty right in the face and say, it will #bealright . Ghana must work again! Where is the Nana Addo who begged us for the mandate?”, the popular musician wrote on his Facebook wall on Sunday and the post has since sparked a heated debate on social media.
Samini noted further in the same post: “The indiscipline in high and low places of government must be checked. We go keep hope alive and continue to soldier on. What’s a man without hope? We can only continue to pray for a better tomorrow. To all my high graders out there, I say it again ,we will #bealright!!!”
The musician’s post seems to be in reference to the uncontrollable exchange rate depreciation, rising inflation and skyrocketing cost of fuel in the country over the last months.
The country’s annual inflation rate has consistently accelerated for the 16th straight month to 37.2% in September of 2022, from 33.9% in August and hovering around 40% this month.
The Cedis was also trading against the dollar at GHC1 is to USD14 as at close of day yesterday Sunday October 23.
PRINCE DAVID OSEI
Samini is not the only celebrity who campaigned for Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP during the last elections but is now complaining of economic hardships and calling on the Presient to fix the crisis.
On October 10, some two weeks ago, popular actor and film maker, Prince David Osei, another pro-NPP campaigner also took to his Instagram page to call on President Akufo-Addo to fix the ailing economy.
Prince David Osei wrote: “Mr President! With all due respect Mr President, why are you sleeping on Ghanaians..
“This is not acceptable Mr President? We deserve better, we know there are global crisis and hardship.
“Yes we know! But looks like you and your ministers are determined to inflict untoward hardship to the citizenry. I decided to give you and your government the benefit of the doubt, I reckon I was wrong! The Youth of this nation are not smiling, it pours, but we are still sweating.. If things don’t change by December, we will mobilize the youth of this country and hit the street irrespective of party affiliations, whether NPP, NDC, CQQ, PNC whatever, doesn’t matter now, we are all in this together.. God bless our motherland We want to see improvement in our livelihoods.. If you have to sack some people do it without fear or favor because your legacy is on the line Sir!! @nakufoaddo.”
Government spokespersons have blamed the economic situation on the ripples of COVID-19 and the Russian-Ukraine war, an excuse not many Ghanaians believe to be true.
