A security man has died when a medical oxygen cylinder exploded in the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua, medical officials said.
According to eyewitnesses, the security man whose name was given as “O Master” was helping to offload medical oxygen cylinders when the ten-point zero cubic meter chamber exploded.
He sustained head injuries and was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital where he was placed on a ventilator but passed on later on Friday.
Hospital officials say two others sustained chest injuries and are receiving treatment at the medical facility. The blast was so intense that it affected the roofing of the storage room where the cylinders were being kept.
The management of the hospital informed the family of the deceased about the incident as the police investigate the case.
Sources at the hospital tell journalists that the medical oxygen cylinders were brought in from Tema Steel Works Limited because the hospital’s oxygen plant has not been functioning for some time now.
