Nearly 17 years of living without a traditional ruler to give direction and aid in community growth, residents of Sekondi have risen to the occasion to demand for a chief.
“Concerned Citizens of Sekondi” clad in red banners amidst chanting, therefore took to the streets to demand for a chief to steer the affairs of the community.
The group made up of youth organisations, Market Women and some residents later presented a petition to the Western Regional Minister, Metropolitan Chief Executive, President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs and two Royal families namely, Nana Anaesi and Nana Nyimparofona on the matter.
According to Mr Richard Mensah, a spokesperson for the group, “these tribe men have tried over the years to facilitate the on-going Sekondi Stool Affairs but to no avail”.
The Peaceful demonstration dubbed “Enough is Enough”, was therefore to solicit support and raise many concerns that Sekondi was losing its culture due to the absence of an Omanhene paving the way for parties and individuals to take undue advantage of Sekondi.
He stated that Sekondi Municipality was lacking developmental projects and economic growth and even as a Traditional Area, they had not been able to celebrate Kumdum festival for the past 17 years.
They said the stagnant situation was not in the best interest of the area and appealed to the authorities to expedite all due processes to bring settlement on the Sekondi Stool affairs.
