Send Special Needs Children to School – Dzifa Gomashie

Ms Abla Dzifa Gomashie, a Former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, has pleaded with parents, especially those in the Ketu South Municipality to send their autistics children to school to acquire knowledge.

According to her, most of such individuals that she was familiar with were into bead making, ICT, modelling among others.

Ms Gomashie, speaking at a five-day Autism Aid App Tour held at the Denu Chicago Basic School, said there were so many other job opportunities for them rather than allowing them to stay at home.

The Autism Aid App Tour is a community outreach initiative in collaboration with the Autism Ambassadors of Ghana and Values for life (VFL- Ghana), an NGO to support children with special needs at the Denu Chicago Basic School.

The five-day programme would see activities such as renovation of the classroom building, training of parents and teachers on how to handle the kids in school and at home.

Ms Gomashie observed that her plea would motivate parents to send their kids to school and if the numbers increase, government would see to their needs and make it more attractive, since it was the country’s own initiative of establishing the special needs school.

“This will help these kids to develop their talent,” she added.

She said as an organization, they have been able to renovate the school, train teachers, train parents and embarked on awareness creation particularly in churches, as well as on radio shows on how to handle autistic children.

The former Deputy Minister said they have also provided these children with some teaching and learning materials and some number of tables.

Ms Alice Akosua Mamaga, the founder of Autism Ambassadors of Ghana, and her team before handing over, took the students through some classroom activities.

She reiterated the team’s commitment to send volunteers twice every month to assist the staff.

Mr Wisdom Dey Kodorwu, Headmaster of the school, urged VFL – Ghana and community members to come to their aid to support the school.
