REPORTS THAT leakages from the rooftop caused the recent floods at the newly constructed Kejetia Market in Kumasi, may not be wholly true after all.
It has now emerged that rainwater came from the adjoining areas to flood the sublime-looking Kejetia market after the heavens had opened up for some few minutes.
This new revelation came to light when members of the Local Government Parliamentary Select Committee visited Kejetia to inspect the imposing facility on Thursday.
According to the lawmakers, who walked through the market for several hours, they have been informed that the floods were caused from external factors.
They said they were told that small drainage system from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Kumasi Zoo and Mbrom, resulted in the massive floods.
The MPs said Kejetia is located in a lowland area therefore rainwater from KATH, Kumasi Zoo and Mbrom heads to Kejetia through small drains, leading to floods.
The Parliamentary Select Committee have therefore urged the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to write to government to intervene to help stop the floods.
The lawmakers, numbering about 30, also inspected the second phase of the Kumasi/Kejetia Redevelopment project and said they were impressed about the work.
Meanwhile, contractors working on the market project have appealed to the KMA to release the remaining lands at the market to help expedite their delivery.
The Kumasi Mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi, has assured that the assembly would relocate traders that are still in the market so the contractors could get more land to work on.
