Ghana’s all-time leading top scorer Asamoah Gyan has described a penalty awarded to Portugal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo in the Group H game against Ghana as a “soft penalty”.
According to him, the action between the defender and Ronaldo does not amount to penalty been rewarded.
Speaking on Super Sports after the game, Gyan said “It was a soft penalty. It was a 50/50 ball. The referee shouldn’t have settled on the penalty. It was a soft one” adding that he could “not understand why the referee did not go and check the screen.”
Cristiano Ronaldo was ruled to have been brought down in the box by Mohammed Salisu, although replays showed that the Ghanaian got a touch on the ball.
Ronaldo scored the penalty to give Portugal the lead but an intriguing final 17 minutes saw the Portuguese edge the game with the odd goal in five.
Former Sunderland and England forward, Darrent Bent on the other hand was convinced that the official made the wrong decision.
The Premier League’s all-time goalscorer, Alan Shearer was also emphatic in his stance that the penalty should not have been given.
