Soldier stop demo against Anglogold

The youth of Anyinam, near Obuasi, in the Ashanti region, were prevented from hitting the streets to demonstrate against Anglogold Ashanti on morning the morning of Monday March 9.

Angry youth in that mining community had planned to demonstrate against Anglogold Ashanti Company because they claim the company had failed to provide employment opportunities for them though the company is doing mining activities in their community.

Interestingly, the Anyinam youth did not seek for police notification and permit before hitting the streets, a development which made their intended demonstration illegal.

Armed policemen quickly rushed to the community around 5am to stop the demonstrators from carrying out their illegal action, but they were met with huge resistance.

The charged youth had already blocked the major roads in the town with cement blocks and other items, even before the police personnel arrived in Anyinam.

According to reports, the police tried, but to not avail, to prevent the angry-looking youth, numbering over hundred, from hitting the streets to demonstrate.

At a point, the police, who were outnumbered by the youth, realized that their lives were in great danger so they quickly called for reinforcement, which arrived on time.

A group of armed military men then surrounded the community and cleared the youth and the blocks that they have used to block the roads to ensure orderliness.

According to eye witnesses, the soldiers apprehended six of the demonstrators, who were said to be among the main architects of the illegal demonstration.

All the arrested people were whisked away in a car to Kumasi and handed over to the Regional Police Command, the paper was informed.
