Speak Out To Prevent Accidents – Police Urges Passengers

Police Chief Superintendent Jude Cobbinah, Eastern Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), has called on passengers to speak out during reckless driving instances.

He said this would help prevent road crashes and restore order on the roads adding that the rate at which road accidents were claiming lives was alarming and all road users including passengers must be alert and begin to speak out.

The other alternative, he said, was for passengers to report drivers who were driving recklessly to the next police check point or call the police emergency numbers for prompt action.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Koforidua, Chief Superintendent Cobbinah said about 95 per cent of all road crashes were attributed to human errors such as wrongful overtaking and over speeding.

He urged passengers especially those who were at the front seat to monitor the speedometer of the car to ensure that drivers were not over speeding adding pay attention to this and “don’t care about what other passengers will say; just think of your life”.

The MTTD Commander said between January-September this year, the Eastern Region recorded about 904 accidents, claiming 293 lives and injuring 1,650 people.

He said within the same period about 258 pedestrians were knocked down on the roads in the region and all stakeholders must be on board to address this reoccurring challenge.

Chief Superintendent Cobbinah called on the media especially the electronic media to use their medium to educate the public on the need to speak out their minds during reckless driving instances.
