Mr. Isaac Asiamah, Minster of Youth and Sports, has cut sod for a ?10.5m renovation works at the Accra Sports Stadium in Accra.
The renovation works, which would be in phases, would see the first phase of the renovation ending by September, 2018 to pave way for the upcoming 2018 Total Women Africa Cup of Nations slated for Ghana from 17th November to 1st December 2018.
Mr Asiamah noted that the Government was fully committed to developing and solving problems that would see the promises made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in their manifesto.
“The Sports Stadium has been neglected for years and has not seen any major renovation work since 2008, which has left the facility to deteriorate and in very deplorable state.
“This Government made a promise to Ghanaians to develop, empower, build infrastructures to help the nation to thrive on and this is just the beginning of the many works to come”.
In an interview with GNA Sports Mr Asiamah said the first phase of the renovation, would be on the metal works and the roofing of the edifice at the VIP stand.
“There has been a lot of corrosion at the stadium, so there would be works at the VVIP Section, the press box, the seats in the stadium, the score board and any other area that needs to be attended to” he said.
According to the member of parliament of Atwima Mponua constituency, through the Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Attah and the Finance Ministry funds has been made available to see a new Accra Sports Stadium, which would host the rest of Africa from November for the 13th edition of the biennial international football championship organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the women’s national teams of Africa.
