A rather perturbing incident in which a British Airways flight (BA 081) from London headed to Accra last Friday was forced to return to London because the military authority in Mali refused to open its airspace, has led to a war-of-words between the Board Chair of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Paul Adom-Otchere and a former Ambassador to Czech Republic, Zita Sabah Benson, a former Deputy Minister.
The flight had about 200 passengers on board and was to have landed at the Kotoka International Airport at approximately 7:30pm, Friday.
When speculations went viral Friday night that the said flight headed to Accra had returned to base just some two hours before it could enter Ghana’s airspace, there was no immediate clarity from official sources on the reasons for the return and one of the several persons who took to social media over the matter was Zita who wrote on her facebook wall:
“Breaking news!!!! With two hours to landing into Accra, British Airways bound for Accra has made a U turn back to London. The plane is currently in Malaga, Spain, as we speak, refueling to go back to London. Ghana airport company read John 3:16 and repent. UPDATE: Plane has landed safely in London, passengers checked into a hotel. Reason BA gave was that they were prevented from entering the Airspace”, Zita wrote.
Even when British Airways subsequently issued an official statement to explain that the incident was the incident was due to “airspace restrictions”, Zita returned to her facebook with another post: “This is the excuse British Airways gave for their inability to land in Accra last night. My sources allegedly claimed dumsor, but this is official response from the Airline so we will go by that. Still, Ghana Airport Company, read John 3:16 and repent.”
Mr. Adom-Otchere who had been tagged multiple times in both posts did not sound the least diplomatic in his response when he fired back at Zita: “Total foolishness and Irresponsible politics. Madam lawyer get your information right ok. Stop fooling!!!!”
Matters did not end there as Zita fired another response: “Paul Adom-otchere unbelievable. As chairman of the Ghana Airport, you think the best way to correct any information is through insults. No wonder Ghana Airport can’t pay their electricity bills. I won’t stoop to your level and insult you. But remember, the people you meet going up are the same people you meet going down. We are used to your insults by now, even on live tv you insult so whats new ? Enjoy your stay in your London hotel and have a safe flight back when they open the airspace.”
Both the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), issued a joint statement to explain that passengers of the outbound flight BA081 have been informed of the incident and that “consequently, British Airways will operate two flights on Saturday, April 9, 2022.”
The statement said : “British Airways Passenger Handling and Ticketing staff will be available this evening, Saturday, April 9, 2022 to offer assistance to affected passengers and also direct those who have been rebooked onto their carriers.”
