The indigenes of Osu have embarked on a demonstration against the Paramount Chief of the Osu Traditional Area, Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI.
The protesters argue that the gazetted chief is not the rightful heir to the throne and that it is rather Nii Nortey Owuo who ought to be recognised as such.
In addition, the protesters wondered why, although parts of Osu remain underdeveloped, Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, who doubles as the President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, is engaged in wanton sale of lands and diversion of stool funds.
Hundreds of indigenes who were dressed in black and red attire with red armbands and red headgear marched through the main streets in Osu on Tuesday, 19 June 2018 carrying placards some of which read: “Hon Speaker Mike Oquaye stop your deals with the usurper chief”, “Art Centre stool is a curse”, “Nii Nortey Owuo is the Osu Chief”, “National House of Chiefs withdraw Kinka’s Gazette”, “Kinka Dowuona is the most corrupt chief in our century”.
Meanwhile, a youth group led by Nii Nortey Adumuah IV has given government a two-week ultimatum to resolve all chieftaincy disputes in Osu and to remove what he described as the “self-styled” Osu Mantse, Nii Kinka Dowuona VI, from the Osu Palace.
Speaking to Class91.3FM during the demonstration, Nii Nortey stated that that there is an old chief who was enstooled in 1984 and has not been de-stooled, yet government forcibly imposed the new chief on them in 2011.
Nii Okwei Nortey, Secretary to Nii Nortey Owuo, had earlier said in a statement that: “The Elders, Shippifoi and Asafoatsemei of the four quarters of Osu, have resolved that the rate at which the so-called Osu Mantse Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI is looting properties of Osu, should be stopped. Nii Nortey Owuo III, Osu Mantse has used the Courts to resolve the chieftaincy dispute affecting the fatherland. Currently we are at the Review stage in the Supreme Court of Ghana. We have been willing to hold fire until the capacity of the self-styled Osu Mantse is resolved both at the Supreme Court and at the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, Dodowa.
“However, while we are waiting, Kinka Dowuona has sued tenants on Osu properties and calling into question deeds which have been duly executed by his predecessor chiefs. In addition, he sells Osu Stool lands and properties at break-neck speed. By these and other means, Kinka Dowuona has created a war chest which makes fighting him in Court, a colossal challenge. We have decided to exercise the right of drawing public attention to the neglect of the issues besetting Osu chieftaincy affairs through peaceful public demonstration”.
Dubbed “Osu Awake against Stool Corruption”, the demonstration coincided with preparations towards the celebration of the annual Homowo festival of the Ga people.
