Success Story Of RTP Awards: Prince Mackay Shares Story

The Radio and Television Personality Awards has been in existence over years and obviously, it has seen many set-backs, high level of criticism from all over and many other unfortunate accords.

Prince Mackay, the initiator of the Radio and Television Personality Awards (RTP), has over the period remain a strong man despite all odds of setbacks, he has been seen as a tenacity and determination personified.

Speaking exclusively to this portal, he said it has not been a bed of roses but he refuses to give up. Adding that, he has done all he could to put the RTP Awards Show to a success.

”Perhaps more would have appreciate my efforts in organizing the show if they know the challenges I endured to pull together the show to a final success” – he said.

Since Prince Mackay, CEO of Big Events Ghana, started organizing the RTP Awards, he has been much maligned with critics pointing to his lack of transparency and sometimes bad organisation skills to discredit him and his awards scheme which recognizes excellence in the radio and TV industry.

However, he says he remains determined to make the awards thrive no matter the criticisms he faces. According to Mackay, every awards scheme comes with its challenges and RTP will not be the first nor the last.

“The criticism, public backlash by the public won’t deter me from further organizing the Awards because I know I am doing a service to the nation,” – he added in the interview process.

According to Prince Mackay, there hasn’t ever been a day where he has thought of not organizing the awards because of the negativity.

“If I wanted to pay attention to what people are saying about the awards, I might have probably ended it by now but we are in the eighth year and it keeps growing stronger and stronger. We have a lot of sponsors and that should tell you my outfit is doing a great job,” he further stated.

This year 2018 edition of the RTP Awards took place last saturday on October 6 at the Accra International Conference Centre and Prince Mackay promised a great show and indeed he delivered.

Radio and Television personalities on various media platforms competed for the ultimate award,  which was the RTP Personality of the Year. The Personalities were Nana Aba Anamoah—GHOne TV, Stacy Amoateng—Platinum Network, Nana Yaw Sarfo—Vision 1 FM, Patrick Osei Agyeman (Countryman Songo)—Adom TV and  Bernard Avle—Citi FM. End of the event saw Stacy Amoateng winning the ultimate prize.

RTP is the most credible awards in Ghana — Prince Mackay

Despite the intense criticism the Radio and Television Personality (RTP) awards has received since its inception eight years ago, the brain behind the scheme, Prince Mackay in an interview with this portal insists it is the most credible in Ghana.

“Every award scheme has its challenges but when it comes to credibility, RTP stands tall. There has been no issue of awardees paying bribes to win their awards and the scheme cannot be manipulated by any individual.

RTP receives massive publicity every year because of the credibility it has obtained over the years” – he said.

Every year when the RTP awards comes around, stakeholders especially those in the radio and TV sphere raise serious issues about the lack of transparency in the awards especially in the selection of winners but Prince Mackay says they cannot be held responsible.

“How can the scheme be held responsible for whether or not a presenter wins an award. The award is based on voting so if your favourite presenter fails to pick up an award, the organisers should not be held responsible” he added.

The many controversies the RTP has generated and even questions about Prince Mackay himself has prompted calls for him to hand over the awards to a more credible person or organization but he would not hear of it.

“I am the best person to organise RTP. I have the experience and what it takes to organise it and there is no way I am selling the rights to any organisation or individual. Seven years is no joke and it is because I organise it. Some award schemes fall off after a year or two but we have been at this for seven years,” he further disclosed.

In spite of all the pre-event problems, the show has on several occasions been well attended and Prince Mackay was happy even with the few hitches like the late start which he blamed on the tardiness of the awardees.
