Tamale: Party supporters burn tyres, block roads

Scores of supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have hit the streets of Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region to protest against the results of the just-ended general election.

According to the protesters, they were told to hit the streets of Bolgatanga, burn tyres and block the roads in Bolgatanga in protest against the verdict of the 2020 Parliamentary and Presidential election.

To the protesters, they will only rest when the Electoral Commission declares John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the election.

“We are doing some demonstration here. Let the media know that the results they are giving us is fake. Honourable Isaac Adongo said we should burn the tyres. Our youth organizer is there. We are all angry, we are all annoyed,” one of the protesters told Bolgatanga-based Journalist Samuel Mbura.

“What we are doing is nationwide and even in Techiman they are doing more than this. If they want peace in Ghana, they should do what is right. The EC should declare John Mahama as the President of the country,” another protester said.

The Police, however, moved in to disperse the crowd.

The EC announced President Akufo-Addo as the rightful winner of the December 7 polls on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, despite concerns raised by the opposition NDC.

President Akufo-Addo won 6,730,587 (51.302%) of the total votes.

Mr. Mahama came second with 6,213,182 votes representing 47.359%.

But the NDC believes they emerged victorious in the polls after winning nine regions out of the sixteen regions.
