Tanko Foundation as part of its social intervention has marked this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day with pupils in various secondary schools located in the Ketu North Municipality in the Volta Region.
The Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual awareness day that falls on May 28. The day highlights the importance of good menstrual hygiene and management at a global level.
Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) coincides with the International Day of Action for Women’s Health 2022, across the world.
The day highlights the importance of menstrual care and raises awareness about the social issues faced by women during menstruation and those who don’t have access to sanitary products.
Education
Donating some packs of sanitary pads to the secondary school pupils, Tanko Foundation led by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Gabriel Kwabla Kwamigah educated them on how to maintain good menstrual hygiene during their periods.
They were educated on how to calculate their menstrual periods, take care of their sanitary pads and the need to use the right materials when menstruating.
They were also schooled on the importance of the global day and how they would help spread the news and myths surrounding menstruation to help create better awareness.
Intervention
Mr. Gabby said girls and women deserve to menstruate in a healthy environment and for this reason; infrastructures such as water supply, household toilets, hand washing facilities as well as an environmentally safe and hygienic disposal system was a necessity.
He added that his foundation was committed to promoting menstrual hygiene and had introduced a number of interventions to ensure that women and girls are able to manage their menstrual cycle with dignity.
“The challenge of the inability of our young girls, especially those in our rural communities, to afford sanitary pads has always been with us, unfortunately. May 28 every year is set aside as Global Menstrual Hygiene Day. It is meant to create awareness and highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene management.
“Due to that, I saw the need to donate some packs of sanitary pads to the 4 SHSs in the Ketu North Municipality to help reduce the challenges and health risks posed to school girls when those days within their monthly cycle arrive. Tanko Foundation will in the coming days reach out to the JHSs in the municipality with the same program as its small way of contributing to the promotion of the girl child education” he said.
