In its bid to promote and sustain sports development and education in Ghana, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Foundation is set to construct an artificial turf at Dompim in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality.
At a short but colourful ceremony to officially cut the sod for the commencement of the project Dr. Patrick K. Ofori, leader of delegation for the GNPC foundation mentioned that the turf’s location at Dompim was agreed on at a meeting by Hon Gilbert Ken Asmah, Municipal Chief Executive, Hon George Mireku Duker, Member of Parliament for Tarkwa, According to the duo Medeama Sporting club was hatched and nurtured in Dompim and as such the said location remained its home grounds in the premiership.
He further explained that it was the vision and hope of Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong, Executive Director of GNPC that the turfs would meet international standards, he stressed that the project was expected to be completed in eight months, he added..
In his submission, the Municipal Chief Executive for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Hon Gilbert Ken Asmah commended the GNPC foundation for considering the Municipality in the distribution of such laudable edifice. He hinted that the move falls directly in line with his vision to empower and develop sport talents among his constituents.
He urged the contractors to employ the local people in Dompim, “I want to commend the Member of Parliament for his consistent and rapid efforts in securing this much awaited project for our constituents; he challenged the people of Dompim to have a sense of belong ness towards the project when completed. “You will be the custodians of the Artificial turf and as such you must inculcate the spirit of maintenance as to prolong its lifespan.
For his part, Hon George Mireku Duker, MP for Tarkwa-Nsuaem constituency reechoed the MCE’s voice on the need to involve local people in the labour work during the construction work.
The MP noted that the field is proven to provide the most grass-like features of international standard” I am reliably informed that the pitch comes with a fence, flood lights, plush dressing rooms and stand by generator to provide power in the unlikely event of power cut from the national grid, he observed.
Hon Mireku Duker argued the need to spread development to all other parts of the Municipality hence the need for the location of the artificial turf by GNPC at Dompim, he said.
He further commended Goldfields Ghana, Tarkwa Mine for the ongoing renovation works at the Abontiakoon stadium. he observed that Sod will soon be cut for the construction of the Tarkwa T&A park into a befitting status kind courtesy Goldfields Ghana Limited, Tarkwa Mine”, whilst Ghana Manganese Company will soon cut for the construction of an artificial turf at Dadwen, he added.
The MP, Hon George Mireku Duker and MCE, Hon Gilbert Ken Asmah together with Nana Kwaku Nkrumah Odiasempa IV, Chief of Dompim jointly performed the sod cutting and officially handed over the project site to the contractor.
In attendance were members of the GNPC foundation, Opinion leaders, Management and players of Medeama Sporting club and the people of Dompim
