Tema DVLA Steps Up Road Safety Education Ahead of X-Mas
The Tema Regional Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, DVLA, has engaged drivers, pedestrians, and other road users on a road safety sensitization as Christmas approaches. The programme, which commenced with the distribution of road safety flyers at the Toll Booth near the Ashaiman, aimed to remind the public of the dos and don’ts on the roads, especially before, during and after the yuletide.
The Deputy Tema Regional DVLA Boss, George Okyere, speaking to the media, said as the festive season beckons, drivers, in their bid to maximise sales, are usually in haste to maximize profit and thereby become oblivious of one cardinal rules, such as resting for at least, 30 minutes after every four hours of driving.
The Regional MTTD Commander of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Superintendent Joseph Owusu-Bempah, backing his claim with statistics, said though there had been a decline in road accidents in the region this year, compared to 2017 during the same period, the decrease is negligible as the fatalities were still high.
He advised pedestrians on when and where to cross the road, and implored drivers to also observe the road traffic regulations at all times, especially when they see pedestrians trying to cross the road.
At another engagement, the Regional DVLA Manager, Atta Kumah Mensah, said the innovations the DVLA had employed now would help reduce the infiltration of fake driver’s licence in the system.
He noted that, the authority is at the verge of introducing what is called Vehicle Registration System (VRS), which is online-based, to reduce the cumbersome processes, as well as minimize, the human interface in registration of vehicles.
He also walked the drivers through some routines such as regular checking of tyres, avoidance of fatigue, among other, in the course of the work.
