The First Egyptian Smartphone Unveiled At Cairo Technology Fair

The first Egyptian-manufactured smart phone came to light Sunday as Minister of Communication and Information Technology Yasser El Kady handed the model to President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi at the events of the Cairo ICT 2017 Conference, Egypt Today reports.

Manufactured by the Ministry of Communication-affiliated SICO Technology, the smart phone was made with a USD 22.5 million in investment in the company’s factory in Assiut.

Having five production lines spread over 4,520 square meters, the factory has a capacity of producing 1.8 million devices per year, the Egyptian media outlet further reports.

SICO mobile phones are now the first local brand in the industry as the percentage of local component is 45 percent.

Under the brand name of ‘Nilex’, the 4G smart phone’s price range generally averages at $112.

The phone, which will start retailing from December 15, has some pretty exciting specifications, which include a 13 megapixel dual camera, fingerprint sensor, 4GB RAM, 64 GB storage, 5.7 HD display, Android 7.0 Nougat and a fast-charging feature.

Mobile phones subscription in Egypt recorded 110 percent by January 2017, with 98.2 million users, according to the Ministry of Communication. Meanwhile, mobile internet users registered 26.16 million subscriptions by the same month.
