Tigo & Airtel Merger Approved

Telecom operators Airtel and Tigo have been given approval by the National Communications Authority (NCA) for their planned merger.

The two entities officially announced the decision to merge in March 2017.

The NCA a few weeks back in a response to an email request from Citi Business News, had said that the two networks were yet to get approval because they were still in the process of furnishing the Authority, with further details on the requirements for the merger.

However, a notice to employees of the two operators signed by the MD of Tigo Ms Roshi Rotman last week said the NCA had given conditional approval for the merger.

“Kindly note that on Thursday, Sept. 14, we received a conditional approval from the National Communications Authority on the planned Tigo Ghana and Airtel Ghana merger.”  The note said.

Both companies will own equal shares under the merger.

The merger between the two is likely to push the new entity to the number two spot of leading telecom operators in Ghana, after MTN, which is the currently the biggest telecom operator in Ghana.

The merger which is the biggest of its kind in the history of the country is expected to increase competition in the industry.

The merger will leave Ghana with four other Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), MTN, Vodafone, Glo and Expresso.
