TUTAG Members Demonstrate Against Council Chair

The Koforodua Technical University branch of the Technical University Tutors Association of Ghana (TUTAG), is demanding the removal of the University’s Council chairman, Professor Samuel Obeng  Apori, for micromanaging the school.

Assisted by students, TUTAG on Thursday morning hit the streets in a demonstration against the Council chairman ahead of a council meeting slated for Thursday.

The staff is accusing Professor Samuel Obeng Apori of meddling in the governance of the school and delaying promotions of staff.

They are also accusing Professor Apori of awarding contracts and making sole appointments without recourse to the council.

According to Dr. Anthony Ayakwa, president of TUTAG, the Council chairman single-handedly appointed a Pro-Vice-Chancellor without recourse to the council members.

Vice chairman of KTU, TUTAC, Dr. Jamal Mohammed believes that if the leadership style of Professor Apori is not satisfactory to the majority of the University community, it will be proper for him to leave.

The Council was supposed to be meeting today but the meeting has been overshadowed by the demonstration.

Joy News’ Maxwell Kudekor says academic activities have been hampered as a result of the demonstration.

According to him, most of the students are out on the streets chanting in support of their teachers and demanding the removal of the Council chairman.

Meanwhile, except the absence of a demonstration in the Ho Technical University, the situation is no different there.

The lecturers are asking the Education Minister to investigate alleged cases of financial malfeasance involving the Chancellor and Pro vice-chancellor.

Joy News’ Ivy Setordzie reported the lecturers as saying promotion is not based on merit but on “whom you know.”

The angry lecturers early on released a statement protesting the state of affairs on campus.

She, however, said academic activities are going on as usual.
