Director of Legal Affairs of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), John Kwame Wajah, has said some Ghanaians did not understand the rationale behind the reintroduction of the television licence fee, hence the opposition against it.
According to him, there was so much talk about it in the media, thus, creating some confusion.
He told Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Tuesday, 9 January that: “A friend of mine called and told me he was not going to pay the licence fee because it was expensive but I explained to him that it was only GH36 for the whole year. He was so amazed after the explanation I gave him and from then on he resolved to pay the fee. He said he did not get that understanding earlier.
“Another person also came to our office in Accra very confused about the whole arrangement but he was satisfied with the explanation we gave him.
“And, so, a lot of people did not get the understanding of what we wanted to do, probably due to the hue and cry about the programme. We want to assure the public that today’s GBC is not yesterday’s GBC; things have changed under the current management, and, so, they should expect a better service.”
