Ghana’s Olympic soccer team, the Black Meteors, yesterday whitewashed their Togolese counterparts 5-1 in the first leg of the African U-23 Championship qualifier at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Kumasi.
On the 27th minutes, Togolese goalkeeper Abdoul-Moubarak Aigba pulled a fantastic save to deny Joel Fameyeh from the spot.
However in the process of the soccer fiesta, Hattrick from Spain-based forward, Kwabena Owusu, goal each from Nassam Yakubu and Osman Bukari ensured a comfortable win for Ibrahim Tanko and his charges.
The Spanish-based player after the match expressed his delight after scoring a hat-trick in Ghana’s win over Togo in the first leg tie of the U-23 AFCON qualifier.
And the star man in the game was Owusu who struck three times for the West African.
“First of all, I have to thank the fans for supporting us, It wasn’t an easy game but we came out as winners. I’m happy that I scored a hat-trick for my country and I thank the coach for inviting me.” – he said.
The result gives Black Meteors a huge advantage ahead of the second leg in Lome on Saturday. Ghana have failed to participate in the new Olympic Games qualifying tournaments since its inception in 2011.
The winner of both legs will face Gabon in the penultimate round of the qualifiers in March next year while the third and final round to determine the seven nations to join hosts Eqypt at the quadrennial competition is planned for June.
