UNESCO supports e- Ananse libraries

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) has assured its full commitment towards the only library project serving academia in the Greater Accra municipal area dubbed ”e- Ananse libraries”. 

Prior to the launch of the newly initiative, the country had not seen any development regarding its state of reading culture for a very long time.

Speaking at the launch last Friday at the University of Ghana, Legon campus, Mr. Abdourahamane Diallo, Head of UNESCO Office, Ghana said the establishment of the library, an initiative by CSR was crucial.

He said this is in tandem with the objectives of UNESCO of impacting lives in the society they operate in.

”UNESCO objective is to ensure that, all forms of aspects in human life are helpful for growth and development. UNESCO recognize the importance of libraries, e- Ananse initiative is coming to compliment the effort of government and stakeholders in contributing to Ghana’s development in reading and use of libraries. UNESCO pledges its utmost support towards this project” he indicated.

According to him, the library project is to help cultivate a culture of reading in the younger generation.

“It is a well-accepted term that readers are leaders and for this reason, we seek to contribute our quota to the future leaders of Ghana with this idea of building libraries by the e- Ananse team,” he noted.

The launch was not only on the celebration of the opening of the new libraries, but a commemoration of Ghanaian story-telling in all its forms, from the oral to the written.

The launch also saw many other dignitaries, including Mr Kofi Asante, CEO of GIFEC, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, deputy Minister of Education among others.

Music Interlude was adhered  by Kwan Pa Music Band, the group treated patrons to good Ghanaian music.

Nearly all the ministers that participated in the launch appealed the organizers to establish an e-Ananse library in their constituencies.

About e-Ananse Libraries

The e-Ananse Libraries are to help revitalize Ghana’s reading culture and provide people with the tools to compete in the 21^st Century by giving them access to high-quality contemporary literature, state-of-the-art computing facilities, and world-class literary events.

The two libraries situated at the University of Ghana, Legon campus and Osu has an e-Ananse technology centre, christened the Innovation Hub, which is equipped with internet-enabled PCs to give library-members access to the full range of resources available on the World Wide Web.

According to Authorities of the library, to register as a member of the e-Ananse Libraries cost of 20 Cedis per year for adults and 10 Cedis Per year for children and opened from Tuesdays to Fridays, 12PM – 8PM as well as on Saturdays, 10am – 6PM.
