Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez has become a major concern after sustaining a knee issue during their 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace, with fears growing that he could be sidelined for months, a source told ESPN.
Medical staff stretched Martínez off the field in the second half of Sunday’s match at Old Trafford. On Monday, he underwent initial tests, and he is scheduled for further scans this week. However, concerns persist that he may have suffered a severe knee ligament injury, which could sideline him for more than six months.
United head coach Ruben Amorim addressed the situation during his post-match press conference on Sunday. He emphasized Martínez’s importance to the team, both as a player and a character, especially during this challenging period. “Now it’s time to support Licha. I think it’s a bad situation. Let’s wait for the doctors to assess it, but I believe it’s serious,” Amorim said.
If confirmed, this injury would mark another significant setback for Martínez since his arrival from Ajax in 2022. In April 2023, he fractured his metatarsal, which prematurely ended his debut season at Old Trafford. After returning at the start of the 2023-24 campaign, he suffered a recurrence of the injury, keeping him out between September 2023 and January 2024.
With Martínez potentially unavailable for an extended period, Manchester United may have to speed up Ayden Heaven’s move into the first team. The 18-year-old, who joined from Arsenal in January, is considered a first-team signing and plays primarily as a left-sided centre-back, similar to Martínez.
