Vexed Youth Raid Illegal Miners

Two individuals involved in illegal mining activities, have been apprehended by the youth in Fumso, located in the AdansiAsokwa District of the Ashanti Region.

The actions of the youth were driven by the severe pollution of two local water bodies, River Fum and Prakum, caused by illegal mining operations commonly known as galamsey.

These rivers serve as vital sources of water for the surrounding communities, and the extent of the contamination has led to widespread concern.

The youth, outraged by the environmental degradation, decided to take matters into their own hands. The illegal miners’ equipment was confiscated by the youth, and both the suspects and the seized items were handed over to the police for further investigation.

Reports shared on X by @eddie_wrt highlighted the community’s frustration and their determination to combat the damage inflicted by the illegal mining activities.

 

Government’s fight against galamsey

The Ghanaian government has made considerable efforts to address the issue of illegal small-scale gold mining, which has become a pervasive problem across the country.

One of the primary strategies employed by the government has been the establishment of regulatory bodies and task forces aimed at enforcing mining laws and curbing illegal activities. The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) and the Operation Vanguard task force, launched in 2017, have played significant roles in these efforts.

These entities have been tasked with the responsibility of monitoring mining activities, arresting illegal miners, and ensuring that the laws governing mining are strictly enforced. In addition to these regulatory measures, the government has introduced community mining programs as an alternative means of livelihood for those involved in galamsey.

These programs are designed to formalize small-scale mining activities, ensuring that they are conducted legally and sustainably.

Despite these efforts, the fight against galamsey remains a significant challenge for the Ghanaian government.

The lucrative nature of gold mining, coupled with socio-economic factors that drive individuals to engage in illegal mining, has made it difficult to completely eradicate the practice. Various media campaigns and public awareness initiatives, such as the #StopGalamseyNow campaign, have been launched to educate the public on the environmental and health impacts of galamsey.

However, the persistence of illegal mining activities continues to pose a threat to the environment and the well-being of local communities.
