Solafunmi Oyeneye, Senior Channels Manager of MTV Base, has charged Ghanaian musicians to take charge of their music videos.
According to her, musicians should not leave their music videos to video directors to take full charge adding that, musicians should always put their target audience first when composing songs.
“Don’t leave it to the video director alone after all it is your own song. Nobody can own your intellectual property more than you and nobody can market it more than you”, Oyeneye said when she spoke on the topic Making Your Music Video Work For You at a seminar under the theme The Future of Music Business organised by Charterhouse ahead of the main awards night.
She further encouraged up and coming Artistes to own their music, especially their music videos because no one would do that for them.
Oyeneye also gave MTV’s perspective saying a committee is always set to scrutinize and select what to put on air, “ the video must pass production quality – the pictures, editing etc”, she concluded.
The Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Barbara Oteng-Gyasi who was the guest speaker at the occasion disclosed her Ministry’s aim to set out policies and structures that will ensure that intellectual property owners received royalties for their creative works.
According to her, such initiatives would reduce constant misunderstanding, strained relationships and accusations of unfairness within the Industry and ensure wealth creation for the practitioners.
