A bill ( Vigilantism and Related Offences Bill 2019 ) aimed at dealing with Vigilantism and Related offences in the country has been laid before Parliament today, April 11, 2019 by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice Ms Gloria Akuffo.
The bill when passed into an Act will disband activities of vigilantism and prohibit the formation of such groups.
The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye has consequently referred the bill to the Constitution, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs committee to be considered under a certificate of urgency.
“Honourable Members, with our Standing Order 119 in relation to the urgency or otherwise of the Bill, for the purposes of its consideration by Parliament, it is the prerogative of the relevant Committee of Parliament…The House shall await the determination of the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs [on the Bill] tomorrow, Friday 12th April 2019,” the Speaker read on the Floor of Parliament.
