The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is fully prepared for the rains this year, Director of communications at the NADMO headquarters, George Ayisi, has said.
According to him, NADMO has sensitised the general public on the things to do in order to prevent flood disaster from occurring.
He however, noted that most of the gutters in Accra are choked, a situation that threatens the measures NADMO is putting in place to forestall flood disaster from occurring in Accra.
His comments come on the heels of revelations by Reverend Dr Stephen Nyakotey-Kwaw, an Aviation Meteorologist Inspector for Ghana that there will be heavy rains along the coastal belt in Ghana this year.
Dr Nyakotey-Kwaw explained that the rains will occur between April and June. He has, accordingly, asked Ghanaians to put in adequate measures to prepare for the rains.
He also revealed that the middle belt of the country will also experience some slight weather changes.
Rev. Dr. Nyakotey-Kwaw told Chief Jerry Forson on Ghana Yensom on Wednesday, 11 April that “this year there is going to be heavy downpour along the coastal belt and so we must all prepare.”
He also cautioned that “it can be very dangerous to walk about when it is about to rain.”
Also speaking on the same show, Mr Ayisi said: “NADMO is ready for the raining season this year, we have sensitised the general public on how to avert flood disasters.”
He added: “We are however faced with some challenges, most of our tunnels and gutters in Accra are choked. If we are able to dredge the gutters it will help and so we are in touch with the Hydrological Services Department so we can dredge the gutters to help deal with the flooding.”
“In the event of any disaster occurring we also have relief items to assist persons who will be affected by the rains.”
