The New Publisher is shocked that Kwasi Kwarteng, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ministry of Education, would have the boldness to grant an interview to a credible radio station as Asaase Radio 99.5 FM, and spew a pack of misinformation and complete untruths to the station and its listeners.
That is rather gutsy and nasty on his part and the sheer bravado with which he spewed the lies makes one wonder if he was not deliberately pushing a mischievous agenda that is somewhat offensive to the nostrils.
His conduct makes us start to question his credibility and statements he had made in the past.
We wonder if his minister, Dr. Yaw Adutwum, a credible and hardworking gentleman, is aware the PRO of his Ministry is someone who says what he does not know as though he were speaking on authority and the repercussions of having such character within his sector.
The station, Asaase Radio, had called the said PRO to seek clarification over reports that the Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba, had said it would not appeal but rather comply wholly with a Court Order to reinstate the school’s former Vice Chancellor, Professor Avoke.
The PRO was made aware that this decision to comply was taken at a meeting of the Governing Council just the previous night and that his Minister, Dr. Adutwum, was in attendance.
The PRO’s response was that the report was false and that no such decision had been agreed on.
His exact words were: “Yes, the Ministry met the University’s Council to have a briefing of what is going on in the University in relation to all matters. A lot of the conversations were issues bothering on the University and cannot be public given the space of time now.
“But the bottom line is that the rumours going around is not factual and at no point in yesterday’s meeting did we ever say or did we ever agree or did we ever reach any consensus as to whether we are affirming or not the decision of the court
“The court has made their decision and that stands on its own. I am sure the Ministry would continue to engage the University’s Council and all stakeholders to bring finality to the issue.”
What on earth would make this PRO, Kwasi Kwarteng, spew such pack of lies to a credible radio station when he knew he was speaking on behalf of the Ministry and by extension, the Minister for that matter.
Shamefully at the time Kwasi Kwarteng was spewing his pack of lies, the Chairman of the UEW Governing Council, Nana Ofori Ansah I, had spoken to other media houses and confirmed that indeed the Council, at the said meeting, took a decision to comply with the directive from the court and reinstate Prof. Avoke.
The Chairman’s words were direct and clear: “We had to be briefed fully by our Lawyer at the Council meeting and the decision was to wholly comply with the Court’s ruling. The court says they should be reinstated and we have to comply with it. Whatever decision that will be taken, some will be happy, others will not so it is based on whose interest that person is playing into. Not everyone will be happy but it is a Court Order and we shall wholly comply”
The decision was unanimous and truly the dismissed Prof Avoke has been officially written to and asked to resume work.
Kwasi Kwarteng, someone paid by the taxpayer, and working as Spokesperson for such a critically important Ministry ought to behave more professionally and act as a credible person.
His Minister should be concerned about such ‘propagandist’ tactics…. Ah well, it could be he was pushing a counter agenda for someone.
