We will get them – IGP pledges to arrest killers of police officer

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), James Oppong-Boanuh has pledged that no stone will be left unturned in his quest to ensure the killers of Constable General, Emmanuel Osei, are arrested.

According to him, the case is being investigated by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), thus the culprits of the heinous act will be brought to book.

“We are investigating; which we have already set in motion. If you recall, yesterday we released a statement and before that I had instructed the CID to take over the case, and that is the level of seriousness we have attached to the case. So they have started investigations. And as I have indicated, we will definitely get them [the perpetrators].

“Let me assure you that we are not just sitting down,” he stated.

Mr Oppong-Boanuh gave the assurance on Tuesday, June 15, when he paid a visit to commiserate with the bereaved family.

Upon arrival at the family house of the late Emmanuel Osei, he was met by a crowd of mourners clad in black and red who were wailing over their loss.

Known to many as Kobby, Emmanuel Osei and a hawker, Afua Badu, met their untimely death at Adedenkpo, a suburb of James Town in Accra. Kobby was providing escort for a bullion van transporting money on Monday, June 14, when was shot.

They were attacked by a group of armed robbers who trailed the bullion van in a taxi and on a motorbike and upon arrival at a less crowded location, fired indiscriminately, killing them instantly.

The driver of the vehicle, however, sustained several injuries and has been admitted at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment.

According to a report filed by JoyNews’ Manuel Koranteng, Emmanuel Osei would have turned 26 years on June 25. He also passed out of the National Police Academy and Training School less than a year ago.

Meanwhile, the IGP has stated that the police has deployed many security personnel on the roads to intensify patrols. He further noted that the police is, “doing what we can to protect the people of Ghana.”

His comments come at a period when many Ghanaians have questioned the ability of the Police to ensure the lives of citizens are protected. While some are calling for the removal of the IGP from post, others have entreated him to beef up security to ensure the recent surge in daylight robberies is nipped in the bud.

Responding to these concerns, the Inspector-General of Police urged calm as the police implements measures to ensure such crimes do not recur.

According to Mr Oppong-Boanuh, such crimes are not peculiar to Ghana as many developed countries, such as the United States of America, United Kingdom are confronted with such deviant behaviours.

“We are doing what we can to protect the people of Ghana. There is no society in the world where there is no crime. Even in the USA, UK and Sweden, where they, more or less have everything, they still have crime. The only place that doesn’t have crime is heaven and we are not in heaven,” he stated

He added that “normally, in a security system, if you have a strategy and the strategy is breached, you go back, regroup and after making your assessment, you try to mend those breaches and that is exactly what we are going to do.

“We will intensify the patrols to make sure it doesn’t happen again.” – SOURCE: myjoyonline
