Police at Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region has arrested Mamunatu Mustapha, 29, the suspected mother of the day-old baby boy which was dumped into a public toilet manhole at Lebanon, near Ashaiman on 3rd December, 2018.
According to information gathered by THE PUBLISHER, Mamunatu, who hails from Edwira was living with a Waakye seller at Lebanon River-State, but felt she was not ready to cater for the baby.
Information further revealed that, the suspect, who had earlier on undertaken a Family Planning method was surprised that she had gotten pregnant.
But realizing that it was too late for any abortion, she decided to do the unthinkable, but luck eluded her.
Reports say a couple of hours after the baby was retrieved from the manhole Mamunatu became the first suspect in the neighbourhood as her stomach suddenly went flat without any news of her delivery. Neighbours, who became suspicious, quickly informed the woman she was living with.
Eyewitnesses say she was picked up by the police at the nick of time as there was evidence that she had packed her belongings and was getting ready to abscond. The bouncing baby boy has since been sent to a nearby Social Welfare Centre.
As at the time of filing this report, Mamunatu was at the Ashaiman DOVVSU, assisting the police in investigation.
Meanwhile, a childless mother (name withheld), who took care of the baby when he was first retrieved, had been crying uncontrollably, and would not eat any food, because the police had taken the baby from her.
