Yendi hospital gives assurance to accept patient death report

The management of the Yendi Hospital in the Northern Region has assured the public that, it will implement to the latter the findings of a yet-to-be presented report on the death of a patient at the facility.

The management has set up an independent committee to investigate allegations of medical negligence that led to the death of a little girl in the facility.

A group calling itself concerned Youth of Yendi petitioned the Management of the hospital to look into the incident and compensate the family.

The group in a letter addressed to the management called for sanctions against the health institution’s medical staff whose supposed reprehensible conduct led to the death of the patient, Abena Nankola.

The group alleged that there was no physician at the post when Abena Nankola was brought to the emergency unit of the hospital at 1:30 am on March 18, 2021.

The group also claimed that several efforts by a nurse on duty to get the physician to return to the health facility to attend to the emergency situation proved futile.

“At 2:25 am on the same day, late Abena Nankola was among a number of patients who were waiting at the Emergency Ward to seek health care, but there was no Consultant to attend to her. As critical as her case was, the only nurse on duty was spotted making calls to the consultant who promised to come but failed to show up despite follow-up calls. After some time, the consultant on duty was no longer answering the calls of the helpless nurse.”

“All this while, late Abena Nankola struggled to breathe, but nothing could be done about her situation since the Consultant was unavailable and will no longer answer the numerous calls placed by the nurse on duty.”

Meanwhile, the management of the hospital has assured it will fully comply with the recommendations of the committee.

According to the management, it won’t shield anyone found culpable.

The medical superintendent of the hospital, Mohammed Ayuba in a Citi News interview thus urged the public to have patience with the committee and allow it to do its work thoroughly.

“…The few staff here work their shifts and all and the allegation was that a child that was brought was neglected to die. And we have set an independent committee to unravel the issues regarding it and when that is done, we will delve into it and implement same fully.”

“I just plead with everyone to allow the committee to do its work because probes do take time but in the end, it will help know things happening that we do not know about in this hospital.
