Some youth said to be members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday attacked the Northern Regional office of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA).
They are said to have assaulted some staff and expressed anger over the award of road contracts to persons believed to be members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The youth said to be numbering about 30 besieged the office at about 11am looking for the Regional Director of the GHA, Mr. Joseph Atsu, who was not in the office at the time.
However, his secretary who was in the reception was assaulted and taken to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses said the youth stormed the office with motorbikes and dragged out the security guard at the entrance who attempted to prevent them from entering the main yard.
They were said to have held the workers hostage and assaulted those who tried to interfere in their affairs and also vandalized some documents at the secretary`s office.
Mr Joseph Atsu in a telephone interview with Graphic Online’s Mohammed Fugu expressed disappointment in the youth for attacking the office over contract procurement issues.
“I have traveled, but I am told they attacked us because of the ongoing contract procurement, in fact we don’t have any influence on the contracts because everything is done at the national level,” he said.
