Zongo Youth, Police Clash Over killing of 7 Robbers
SEVERAL ZONGO youth in Kumasi blocked roads and burnt car tyres on Thursday morning, posing serious security threat to residents.
The charged-youth were agitated, following the shooting to death of seven suspected robbers by the police on Tuesday.
Seven suspected armed robbers, all male and of Zongo extraction, were shot dead by the police after a gun battle.
While the police insisted that the seven were armed robbers, who were overpowered after shooting at the police, the aggrieved Zongo youth maintained that all the seven deceased were innocent.
Hundreds of the youth, in a protest, blocked roads that lead to the Central Mosque area.
Some of the youth were holding placards with inscriptions that tend to suggest that the police had killed innocent people.
Brimming with rage, they burnt car tyres and threatened to manhandle any policeman that would dare cross their path.
When at a point, the lawlessness was getting out of hand, more armed police and military men were dispatched to the area to restore law and order.
THE PUBLISHER has gathered that the youth hurled stones at the policemen, and threatened to attack police stations within the Zongo communities in Kumasi.
